Understanding the terminology and substances prevalent in our communities is a critical first step toward addressing the complexities of addiction. For example, what is a dab, or what are dabs? Dealing with dabs poses a substantial substance use challenge, requiring compassionate and informed intervention for treatment seekers.

What to Know About Marijuana

Marijuana, commonly referred to as weed or pot, is a psychoactive drug derived from the cannabis plant. It’s often used recreationally for its mind-altering effects but can also be used medicinally to manage certain health conditions.

What Are the Dangers of Marijuana Abuse?

While some states have legalized marijuana for medicinal and recreational use, its abuse can lead to significant problems, including:

  • Mental health issues – Regular marijuana use can exacerbate existing mental health conditions and may increase the risk of developing new ones.
  • Physical health problems – Smoking marijuana can lead to respiratory issues, while long-term use can affect cognitive function.
  • Dependency – While not as common as with other substances, some marijuana users can develop a dependency, leading to withdrawal symptoms when they try to quit.

One increasingly popular method of consuming marijuana is through a process known as dabbing.

What Is a Dab?

So, what is a dab? Dabs are concentrated doses of cannabis, often in the form of wax or oil. They’re typically made by extracting tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)—the chemical responsible for marijuana’s psychoactive effects—using a solvent like butane. The resulting product is heated on a hot surface and then inhaled.

Dabs, also known as butane hash oil (BHO), are far more potent than traditional forms of marijuana. While a typical marijuana joint contains around 10% to 15% THC, dabs can have between 60% and 90%. This high concentration can lead to a more substantial, quicker high, which can be dangerous for inexperienced users or those with a low tolerance.

How to Help Someone Struggling with Marijuana Abuse

If you’re concerned about a loved one’s marijuana or dab use, here are some steps you can take:

  • Educate yourself – Learn about the effects and risks associated with marijuana and dab use.
  • Open a dialogue – Express your concerns honestly and openly, avoiding judgment or blame.
  • Encourage professional help – Suggest they reach out to a substance abuse professional or support group.
  • Be supportive – Be there for them throughout their journey, offering emotional support and understanding.
